This is a fundraising pattern for my late brother, Mino (1971-2004)

“Bush Plum 2” is a redesigned neckerchief based on “Mino’s Bush Plum,” one of my earliest designs. After a few years of design experience, I felt I could improve on this pattern while keeping the basic shape.

It is a perfect beginner shawl/neckerchief project, as it requires only a few basic skills. For more experienced knitters, you may play with colors and change the order of the yarn over rows. This pattern can be knit with any weight of yarn, and it takes less than one skein. The yarn overs represent bush plums that Indigenous Australians gather. They add an interesting accent to this simple stockinette stitch neckerchief.

Special thanks to Aiko. If she had not knit the original “Mino’s Bush Plum” neckerchief, I would not have thought of redesigning it to keep this pattern alive.

Skills required: K, P, YO, K2tog

Finished size after blocking: 48” wingspan x 13” depth (122cm x 33cm)

All the proceeds of this pattern will be donated to the Minoru Hokari Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Australian National University. My late brother, Minoru Hokari (“Mino” 1971-2004) died of cancer at the age of 32. The scholarship fund supports young scholars who study Indigenous Australians through fieldwork. We are trying to fully fund it to achieve its perpetuity. Please help.

Please visit Being Connected with HOKARI MINORU to meet Mino.
