The Miniature Herringbone stitch gives a dense fabric, which is why it was chosen for this cover. Note that the stitch needs to be worked in a needle size larger than usual for the yarn weight. If you are a tight knitter then consider using 8mm (US11) needles.

The Miniature Herringbone stitch is difficult to work in the round using two circular needles, so magic loop or dpns are recommended.

Stitch pattern adapted for working in the round: originally from A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns by Barbara G Walker, Pitman, 1971.

The cover is worked in the round, from the opening end, and a three needle bind off is used to close the other end.

11 December 2011: Pattern updated to include instructions for the smaller Kindle 4 (16.6 cm by 11.4 cm) as well as for the Kindle Keyboard 3G model (19 cm by 12.3 cm)
