From the pattern description: “No rune could better epitomize Severus Snape than the “Thurisaz” rune. In its true form it stands for a reactive force, a directed force of destruction and defense, conflict. It symbolizes instinctual will, a regenerative catalyst. A tendency toward change. Catharsis, purging, a cleansing fire. “Thurisaz” likewise captures the younger, not-quite-as-wise, spirit of the Half-Blood Prince in its reverse form, where it symbolizes danger, defenselessness, compulsion, betrayal, dullness, evil, malice, hatred, torment, spite, lies. A bad man. Both forms of “Thurisaz” are centrally present in this pattern, as both parts shared equal importance in forming the hero all came to know this brave man to be. A Vandyke Check pattern pays homage to the distinctly conflicted halves of Severus that, somehow, together work to create a beautiful tapestry of the soul.”
