Virginia Catherall

Virginia Catherall

I live and work in Salt Lake City yet I am woefully ignorant about the Great Salt Lake. I am attempting to learn more about the lake that has recently inspired me…and to knit that inspiration. Through this process I am finding meaning in landscape, a type of knitting terroir, that brings my home, my place, into the forefront of my life. And because of that, I have come to hone my thinking about environmentalism, conservation, and preservation of land. I hope you enjoy some of the patterns I am creating. Visit my blog: lakesaltknit.com.

I have been chosen as the 2023 Artist-in-Residence for Glacier National Park! Stay tuned for beautiful Montana inspiration for Wearable Landscapes.

In 2015 I was selected as the Artist-in-Residence for Black Rock Desert National Conservation Area in Nevada. During the summer of 2015 I created 15 designs inspired by Black Rock Desert. I have published the patterns individually and in an ebook called desert•wraps.

In May 2016 I was selected to create an installation in an exhibition titled Natural Threads at the Heritage Museum and Gardens. In conjunction with the exhibition, I created a set of patterns inspired by tree bark that is published in the book and ebook called identitatum•arborum.

In 2016 I was selected as the Artist-in-Residence for Great Basin National Park. I lived there in the fall of 2016 and was inspired by the beautiful desert, mountains, caves, and sky! Patterns from the residency can be found in my ebook called Great Basin Knits.

In 2019 I was selected as the Artist-in-Residence for Capitol Reef National Park and lived there in September 2019. I was inspired by the soaring red rock cliffs of the waterpocket fold and have published several patterns from that residency.
