11-149 Super Simple Square-Top Alpaca Hat
Luscious alpaca yarn in a no-fuss pattern! The double-sided rib at the cuff can be worn down (which creates a slouchier look) or folded up (for extra warmth around the ears). Spaced Moss stitch bands provide a touch of interest; the top is worked as a flat square.
Skills Used
Knit, k2tog (knit 2 together), knit in the round, make 1, purl, ssk (slip, slip, knit 2 together through back of loop).
Gauge Note
This hat is knit at a tighter gauge both for warmth and to somewhat mitigate the natural relaxation properties of alpaca yarn.
Suggested Needles
3.25 mm / US 3 circular 16” / 40 cm and set of 4 dpn
Adjust needle size as required to obtain the correct gauge.
Notions
3 + 1 stitch markers; yarn needle for weaving in ends
Method
Knit in the round from the ribbing up using a 16” / 40 cm circular needle until the crown shaping; as stitch numbers decrease, double-pointed needles are used to finish the crown shaping.
Stitch patterns are written out.
