This pattern calls for 1/2 oz of colored single zephyr and 1/2 oz of white. Single zephyr is similar to modern fingerling weight yarn. The suggested needles are “bone knitting needles, small size,” which is up to your interpretation.

The hood consists of 11 stripes, 6 colored and 5 white. Each stripe is worked in stockinette (row of knit, row of purl). The white stripes are knit opposite the colored, so that one shows the “Vs” of stockinette stitch and the other shows the “Us” of reverse stockinette.

Each stripe is 8 rows, so the first row of the colored stripe should be knit, and the last row (row 8) should be purled.Then, switch to the white yarn, but instead knitting row 9, do another row of purl then continue with standard stockinette.
