Pattern Notes from Knitting Without Tears: “You will need 4 oz of knitting worsted, and a set of sock needles of a size to give you a gauge of 5 st to 1”. If you want a gauge of 6 st to 1” for tough wind-and-weather resistant mittens, increase the number of rows and stitches by 20% (one-fifth). But 5 sts to 1” yields nice warm elastic mittens.”

EZ’s recipes for mittens can be found in chapter 5, “Other Knitted Garments” (pages 106-107).
