Hat and Cowl are different gauges, they are listed in the pattern as are yardages.

The cowl is fully lined which makes it very warm. There are supplemental instructions for a lighter weight unlined one as well.

The Hat is not lined.

The chart is only 22 stitches wide and can be used for other knitting projects if you are so inclined. It could also easily be used in a double knitting project if you have patience that I do not possess.
