I love fairy tales; one of my favourite collections of tales is “One Thousand and One Nights”, commonly known as Arabian Nights.
The tales were told by Scheherazade to her King and include Aladdin, Sinbad the sailor and Ali Baba.
The blanket is inspired by design elements from Persian Carpets, the Aladdin story features a magic carpet ride..
The base colour is orange/red as most of the historic carpets are dyed with madder, which is a natural dye and was always one of my favourites. The dye is made with madder root and the best madder comes from Iran, it’s an earthy rich dye and I always think it smells of the desert.

If I ever have grandchildren I will read them the Arabian Nights and other fairy tales and I like to think that a blanket like this will inspire them to take magical carpet rides to imaginary worlds.
