This pattern is available for free on my blog. If you want an ad-free, large print PDF version, it is available to purchase through Ravelry.

The Aspen Tweed Hat is actually two hat patterns for the price of one! The directions include instructions on how to make the very popular messy bun hat as well as the instructions for the more traditional beanie either with or without the pom pom. You can make one or the other or both!

Included with your purchase are 3 PDF’s. One has the print friendly main pattern for both styles of hat. The second is a photo tutorial for the special stitch needed for the decrease at the top of the beanie hat. The third PDF contains a step-by-step photo tutorial for how to make a pom pom using just your fingers. If you have a pom pom maker or some other preferred way to make your poms, you won’t need the third PDF, but it’s a bonus if you’re interested. You only print out what you want.

This hat is not difficult. It uses only single crochets and half double crochets. The half double crochets are not worked through both loops as they traditionally would be, but are worked by alternating the front loop of one stitch and then the back loop of the next stitch. This process gives your hat a wonderful texture and depth that a regular half double crochet would not.

This pattern uses a super bulky size 6 yarn and a N (9.00 mm) crochet hook. If you use a different weight yarn, your finished hat may not be the right size.
