Designer Becky Skuse says: “I’ve always adored rainbows, so a rainbow blanket had been on my must- make list for ages. I chose simple granny squares because they allow the rainbow colours to stay as the focus of the design, while the cream background keeps the look light and cheerful.
For me, crocheting with each colour in turn was like a form of colour therapy, each one mesmerised me with its vibrant charm. To make the coloured squares stand out, I chose a yarn with a slight sheen, then used a contrasting matt- effect cream yarn for the background – both are super-soft yarns to make the blanket nice and snuggly.”

You will need a soft DK yarn, approx 100m/50g of 10 different colours.
You can use any 10 colours you like to make your rainbow. You will make 10 squares of each colour, for a total of 100 squares.

For the borders, you will need a cream or white DK yarn, approx 650m/200g.

Each colour square measures 7.5cm square (before border).
Each square measures 9cm square (after border).
Finished blanket measures approx 100cm square.

Purchased pattern is given in UK crochet terms first and then US crochet terms. A layout diagram is included, plus an alternative layout diagram.

You can join you squares in any way you wish – the purchased pattern describes two different options that you can choose from, or use your own method. Joining Option A is more portable, but you’ll need to sew the squares together. Joining Option B is less portable, but the squares will be joined while you work the cream border on the squares.
