Half horse, half eagle, Hippogriffs are proud animals who demand respect. Film designers took great care in bringing this fan-favorite, mythology-inspired creature to life on-screen. They consulted veterinarians and physiologists, examining the mechanics of how birds fly and how horses gallop to make sure the Hippogriff’s movements were as lifelike as possible. It was important to get the body proportions correct so that the animal could feasibly carry multiple humans on its back, as Buckbeak does in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Buckbeak’s wingspan is twenty-eight feet!

Worked from the top down with minimal finishing beginning with a ribbed collar, German short rows are used to gently raise up the back of this pullover inspired by Hagrid’s beloved Hippogriff Buckbeak. A band of stranded colorwork feathers emphasizes the neck area, while easy increases build out the yoke and body. Once the sleeves are separated, the feather motif is continued on. Waist and sleeve shaping create a flattering flared shape reminiscent of the creature’s stunning wingspan.
