Notes from the Designer:

Inspired by the shine that the lyocell adds to the Ephemeral Fingering yarn, I knew I had to create a pattern that also shines, and what shines better than a diamond? Since the left side is a copy of the right side and diamonds are made of carbon, I had to name this shawl “Carbon Copy.” The shawl contains filet crochet and a two-row mosaic crochet. This mosaic technique allows you to carry the yarn up the side without having to cut it after each row. The edging is a simple single crochet around with color changes at different sections, which gives the shawl a finished look.

  • Click here to watch a video tutorial on two methods to work mosaic crochet.
  • Version A sample used approximately 1,760 yds/1610 m total: Color A) 465 yds/425 m, Color B) 465 yds/425 m, Color C) 415 yds/380 m, and Color D) 415 yds/380 m.
  • Version B sample used approximately 1751 yds/1601 m total: Color A) 892 yds/815 m, and Color B) 859 yds/785 m. In the Filet Diamonds sections when pattern states “dc in next xx sts,” the stitches include both double crochet and chain spaces as a stitch.
  • Pay close attention to the pattern change between Sections 4 and 5.
  • Gauge isn’t crucial but will affect yardage used.
  • The pattern design cannot be easily widened, as it may change the overall appearance of the design. An alternative would be to make a wide border around the shawl.
  • The length can be made longer or shorter by eliminating repeats in any section(s).
  • See below for detailed information on how to read the mosaic chart.
  • Tip: If you tend to crochet tightly, you might have to change to a larger hook for the Mosaic sections.
