My son wanted me to give his tennis coach a knit hat for Christmas this year. I thought it was a wonderful idea and said yes. After I began designing the hat, we realized he really has seven coaches, so it was only right if I made one for each of them. So I knit seven hats with this pattern! Then Marlon wanted his own hat so I found a ball of bulky weight yarn and modified the pattern to make a two versions: a worsted weight and a bulky weight version of the same knit hat pattern. Every year, I say I’m too busy working to do a handmade Christmas, and I overcame myself and did it anyway this year. Yay!

The gray hat is knit using bulky weight yarn and the black hats are knit using worsted weight yarn.

Enjoy the patterns. They are quite easy, and the mistake rib pattern looks like ribbing but is more substantial than a stretchy rib pattern. I designed the hat this way so we could sew the academy’s logo patch on each hat. Also, the vertical striping in the pattern looks gorgeous in the decreases at the crown (a starburst design).
