As I was knitting this cowl with an improvised colorwork stitch pattern, I was watching a Masterpiece Mystery show set in the city of Amsterdam and admiring the shots of the city. It occurred to me that the stitch pattern looked an awful lot like the tall, narrow houses so common in the city, the reflection of which can so often be seen in the canals that are so ubiquitous. From this realization came the name for this pattern, Dutch for “the reflection.”

To knit this pattern, you need to know how to:

  • knit and purl in the round and
  • read and work from a colorwork chart.

This pattern is designed to use a set of five 20 g mini skeins of sock yarn. At the gauge specified, there will be some yarn leftover from each mini skein, but even slight differences in gauge can have an impact on yarn usage. If you are working to a different gauge, making any changes to the cowl’s finished measurements (i.e., adding width or length), or using partial skeins rather than minis, be sure you have enough yarn to complete your project.
