From The Court Crochet Doyley Book, by Mrs. (Eliza) Warren, published by Ackerman & Co. in 1847.

Thread called for is “Raworth’s Crochet Thread, No 30” which may or may not correspond to a modern size 30. No hook size is suggested, and no finished dimensions are listed.

While the design itself is not difficult, it is a very old one, and not all terms used are the modern ones; however, the stitches are clearly explained in the text. Additionally, the pattern as written calls for breaking the thread and starting over after every round, but an experienced doily maker may “climb out” using the usual techniques—note that the new round does not always start where the old round ends, so this does require strong pattern-reading abilities.

Recommended for experienced crocheters, or those looking for an interesting challenge.
