This hat was designed with a double layer band over the ears for those days when the wind blows right through an ordinary hat. You can knit both the body and the ear lining in your favorite outdoor wool for warmth, or choose to knit the lining in a softer wool or non-wool yarn. In sizes from toddler to adult large, everyone in the family can get out and enjoy those whirlwind winter days in comfort!

This pattern is a fun knit for the intermediate knitter. Hat is worked in the round from the brim up and the ear-band lining is picked up and worked afterwards. The pattern is 4 pages long and includes charted directions for the pattern areas. If you prefer not to work from charts, an additional one page pdf of the written out directions for the pattern areas should be downloaded when you download your pattern. The pattern has been professionally tech edited and fully test knit to be clear and free of errors.

Sizes: To fit toddler (child, adult S, M, L)

Finished Measurements:
Outside circumference:
18 (19 1/2, 21, 22 1/2, 24 1/2) in/ 45.5 (49.5, 53.5, 57, 62) cm.
Because of the lining, which will add some bulk to the inside of the hat, choose an outside circumference that is closest to actual head size without any negative ease.
Hat height: 7 (8, 8.75,9 9.5) in/ 18 (20.5, 22, 23, 24) cm.

Gauge: 16 sts and 30 rnds/ 4 in/ 10 cm over whirlwind pattern in the rnd. For ease in swatching: This needle size gave 16 1/2 sts/4 in over a stockinette stitch swatch worked back and forth.

What You Need:
For MC: 87 (108, 127, 140, 161) yds/ 80 (99, 116, 128, 147) m aran weight yarn. All samples shown used Bartlett Fisherman 2 ply wool.

For CC: 38 (41, 54, 58, 63) yds/ 35 (37, 49, 53, 58) m aran weight yarn. Mom’s hat (Adult S) used Malabrigo Merino Worsted. Daughter’s hat (Child’s) used Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino used doubled. Son’s hat (Child’s) used Bartlett Fisherman 2 ply wool.

One 16 in circular needle and one set of dpns in size required to obtain gauge for each type of yarn. I used US #5/ 3.75mm when using MC Bartlett yarn and US #7/ 4.5mm when using CC Malabrigo yarn or Cashmerino doubled. You may need a size or two above or below that.
