In Ship of Magic, the first book in the Liveship Traders Trilogy by Robin Hobb, Malta is given a courting gift by Reyn Kuprus, though she is unaware that he considers it as such. It is cold outside and Reyn gives Malta his scarf, ablaze with precious flame gems, that opens to become a shawl when Malta puts it on to warm herself. First Gift replicates that scarf/shawl, though whether you emblazon it with blue gems, the most precious, red gems, the least valuable, or any other color, it is sure to be an accessory you choose to accompany you often.

This shawl can be gathered to use as a scarf or let flow to its full width to use as a wrap. There is a narrower, scarf-only version in the pattern that can be knitted in either lace weight or fingering weight yarn. Both have a lightly beaded option.
