Whit’s Knits: Granny Chic Crocheted Hat
February 1, 2008

The Materials
• 1 skein of worsted weight yarn. (I used Manos del Uruguay’s Handspun Semi-Solid Wool in the color Cirrus #39.)
• 1 size I crochet hook

The Pattern
Gauge
3 single crochets = 1”

To fit
Women’s size medium

Special Abbreviations
Dtr (double treble): yo (yarn over) 3 times, insert hook into the work, yo and pull through work, yo and pull through the first two loops, yo and pull through the next 2 loops 2 times
Double dtr group: 3 dtr into same sc as last group until 1 loop of each remains on hook (4 loops on hook), skip 5 sc, into 6th sc work 3 dtr until 1 loop of each remains on hook, yo and pull through all 7 loops on hook.

To Begin
Round 1: Chain (ch) 6, slip stitch in first ch to make a ring.
Round 2: 12 single crochet (sc) in ring. Slip stitch into first sc. (12 stitches)
Round 3: 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st, repeat from to end of rnd. (18 stitches)
Round 4: 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, repeat from to end of rnd. (24 stitches)
Round 5: 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of next 3 sts, repeat from to end of rnd. (30 stitches)
Round 6: 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of next 4 sts, repeat from to end of rnd. (36 stitches)
Round 7: 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of next 5 sts, repeat from to end of rnd. (42 stitches)
Round 8: 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of next 6 sts, repeat from to end of rnd. (48 stitches)
Round 9: Ch 5, work 2 dtr (see special abbreviations) into same st that ch comes from.

Then start crocheting from the * in the double dtr group special abbreviation (the first time you make a double dtr group there will only be 6 loops at the end.). Next, ch7, 1 double dtr group, repeat from to end of rnd, ch7 and slip st to top of first dtr group.

Round 10: Ch 1, sc into top of group, 7 sc into 7ch arch, repeat from 1 sc into top of first group. (64 stitches)
Round 11: Ch1, 1sc into each sc to end of rnd.
Round 12: Repeat last rnd.

Repeat Rounds 9-12: (Instead of skipping 5 sc in the middle of the double dtr group, just make sure that the double dtr groups are lining up with the groups from the previous rounds.)

Continue to make 1sc into each sc until the brim is 2” long. Cut a tail and sl st it into the next sc. Weave in the end, block your hat and then wear it!
