You can adjust the size of each scale tip by changing the number of slip stitches you do at the start of each scale tip row.

Since writing this pattern, I have made a couple of scarves with larger scales and, due to the height of the hdc stitch, I have made the following adjustment: the number of slip stitches equals the number of rows in the scale multiplied by 1.5, e.g. 4 rows - 6 sl st; 10 rows = 15 sl st; 16 rows = 24 sl st. Another way of looking at this is 3 sl st for every 2 rows of scale size. But please feel free to be creative with your own one and make the scales to suit your colours or style. Cheers :)
