Shawl with ruffled edge, double moss stitch body, and single moss stitch along the top edge and spine.

Since I first began knitting I’ve been in love with moss stitch—its pebbly texture, the way the alternating knits and purls help mix up the colors of variegated yarn. This pattern is a result of that love and of my desire for a simple, yet pleasing, project for some road-trip knitting. The edges and center of the shawl are worked in moss stitch; the shawl body is worked in double moss stitch. Once you’ve worked a few rows, you’ll be able to tuck the pattern away and knit comfortably while chatting or enjoying the view as it rolls past your window.

While this pattern is written for sock-weight yarn, you may use any yarn you want: just use needles several sizes bigger than those called for on the yarn label and be sure you have plenty of yarn to knit to the size you desire.
