Mr Ware, my much loved Grandad, was a man who grew up in a time when the everyday dress code was smart-casual. And it was quite acceptable to wear socks with your shorts and sandals. Especially if those socks were as gorgeous as these ones! I imagine that he would’ve thoroughly enjoyed wearing a pair of Mr Ware Socks — especially on his annual winter visit to the South Island to visit the rellies.

These very textured unisex socks are knitted in the round, from the toe up, with a clever design worked simply with knit and purl stitches to create an intricate texture. This pattern is written for three sizes. The beauty of knitting from the toe up is that you can choose how long you’d like your socks to be.

Supplies

  • 100g (approx 400m) Maniototo Sock (85% merino-cross wool, 15% nylon), sample made in Jewelled Gecko colourway
  • 2.25mm (US 1) knitting needles, or needles that allow you to achieve gauge. These instructions are written for magic looping, but you can use your preferred method of sock knitting.
  • two stitch markers
  • darning needle.

Gauge
15 sts x 22 rows = 5cm in stocking stitch unblocked.

Finished size
This pattern is written for three sizes: small, medium and large. They will fit feet with an approximate circumference of 21cm, 23cm and 26cm, respectively.
