All squares are worked back and forth on size 6 (4.0mm) needles. Each square begins with 5 rows of seed stitch. These rows are not counted as part of the pattern or chart. The patterns are then knitted over the center stitches with the first and last 5 sts always worked in seed stitch. Most of the squares are worked over 80 total sts, increasing to 85 sts for the main pattern, but a few patterns may be worked over slightly more or slightly fewer sts, so be sure to read each set of directions carefully. The patterns are repeated until the square is approximately 12 1/2” in length. It is better to finish the square a little short of 12 1/2”, rather than longer, and block it to the appropriate size. The square is finished with 5 more rows of seed stitch.
