This mostly mindless piece is designed as a fun, versatile accessory that, once you get the hang of two-color brioche, is quite simple to knit. The finished product is entirely reversible (technically, the whole thing is only one continuous surface) and very stretchy!

Once completed, cinch one end up and wear as a thick, two-layer beanie (instructions for shorter skullcap and longer slouch hat provided). Pull the cinch apart while wearing it to slide down around your forehead as a headband, or all the way down to your neck as a cozy, snug, and twisty cowl to put on a helmet or a different hat.

Made from sock-weight yarn, the background color can be comprised of scraps or heavily variegated yarn that might be deemed too “intense” as a foreground. Or, screw it: be intense if you want! I ain’t here to yuck your yum. Do note, however, that the reverse side will be completely hidden once completed, so choose your foreground and background colors wisely!

Skills Required:

  • Provisional cast on with crochet hook
  • Knitting in the round on 16” circular needles
  • Two-color brioche (both knits and purls)
  • Kitchener in brioche (instructions provided)
