Using a size 9 needle (or whatever size you like) and your choice of fiber, knit this diminutive, fashionable poncho in a gauge of 4 sts = 1” (due to all the YO’s). Make one to fit everyone from a size 0 on up! Your gauge will determine the size of your finished poncho. Knit loosely to emphasize the openness of the lace.

If you’re new to lace knitting, I recommend following the first set of directions (back and forth on straight needles in two pieces) for your first Renaissance Poncho.

I have provided 2 sets of directions – choose to make your poncho in 2 pieces on straight needles, or do it in the round on circulars (p. 4). Begin at the neck with a 16”, then graduate to a 24” and a 29” as you get closer to the bottom edge.

Lace knitting is not technically difficult, but the knitter must take care not to lose count. Missing one YO will throw off the entire pattern, and even the smallest mistake should not be ignored, as the eye of the beholder will go right to the blooper (in other words, there is no fudge factor whatsoever). The good news is that even if you must rip, this project really does work up quickly. And, to boot, there’s no binding off – instead, you crochet off instead in the traditional manner.

“Crocheting off” your poncho is not as daunting a task as it might appear. The principle is that you are grouping stitches together and joining the groups with crocheted chain stitches (see diagram in the pattern for specific directions).
