The Roinn * hat features a stranded colourwork motif, loosely inspired by Bronze Age artefacts found here in Ireland. The pattern is worked in the round, with guidance for working a standard or folded brim.
This pattern is written in four sizes, achieved by varying the gauge.
The samples are all knit in Aran weight yarns, that adapt well to multiple gauges.

  • “reen/rine/rin” depending on dialect, meaning to divide, share or separate in Irish.

Skills required: knitting in the round, stranded colourwork, decreasing, reading colourwork charts.

The colourwork motif instructions are provided in charted form only.

Gauge:
Gauge is given in stocking stitch for reference purposes only. The needles used to achieve gauge in stocking stitch should also be used for ribbing. Gauge in ribbing is not given, because ribbed fabric is so variable.
Gauge information listed below is measured over 10 cm / 4”, on fabric worked in the round, and after blocking.

Size 1: 23 sts & 36 rounds in stocking stitch.
23 sts & 24 rounds in stranded colourwork.

Size 2: 21 sts & 34 rounds in stocking stitch.

Size 4: 19 sts & 30 rounds in stocking stitch.

Needles:
Needle sizes listed are a starting point only; every knitter’s gauge is unique. Please use the needles that give you the correct gauge in both stocking stitch (reference for the ribbing) and stranded colourwork.

Use your preferred type for working in the round:
DPNs, or a combination of 40 cm circular needle with DPNS for the crown, or a long circular needle (100cm or longer) for magic loop technique.

Size 1: 3.5 mm & 4.5 mm.
Size 2: 4 mm & 5 mm.
Size 3: 4.5 mm & 5.5 mm.
