This pattern was designed in collaboration with Toad Hollow Yarns, but is now available for all!

Pack your bags and hop onto the caravan! The Roulotte (“caravan” in French) shawl is an epic journey through landscapes of mosaic knitting and lace. Without any purls to slow you down, the trip will simply fly by!

Yarn Requirements

Fingering weight yarn in 4 colors: three main colors MC1, MC2, MC3 and one contrast color CC.

Sample used Toad Hollow Drusilla/Sock Toad (superwash merino/nylon, 400yds/100g). Yardage for the sample:

  • 360yds CC - “Nomad”
  • 180yds MC1 - “Free Spirit”
  • 260yds MC2 - “Eleutheromania”
  • 260yds MC3 - “Lady Defiance”
  • total: 1060yds

Tassels used an additional 20 yds each. Testers used between 900 and 1400 yds.

Tools

  • 40” circular needle in size needed to obtain fabric of your liking. Suggested size: US5/3.75mm
  • tapestry needle
  • (optional) cardboard for making tassels
  • (optional) crochet hook for fringe

Sizing/Gauge: 5 sts in 1”/2.5cm

One size. Sample measures 85”/216 cm from tip-to-tip and 24”/60cm deep after moderate blocking.

Gauge was measured in unblocked, unstretched garter stitch. It is not critical for the shawl, but a different gauge may change the yardage required or the size of the shawl. I am an average tension knitter. If you are a loose knitter, consider going down a needle size to avoid running out of yarn.

Technical Notes

This pattern is suitable for an intermediate knitter. Instructions are both charted and written. Prior to knitting this pattern, you should be familiar with casting on, knitting, slipping stitches, and basic lace involving yo, k2tog, and ssk. Some support is provided for striping yarns and reading mosaic knitting charts.

Pattern support can be found in my Ravelry group in this thread.
