The Purple Sea Star lives along the northwest coast of the US, and scurries about quite quickly on hundreds of little feet. This sea star has feet knitted in (but not hundreds of them, although it may seem that way). You can stiffen the arms with pipe cleaners – or not - as you prefer.

I designed this sea star along with an easier version with no feet after a visit to the Oregon coast. The easy version is published in Love of Knitting Toy Issue as Serene Sea Star. Even though it is an entirely different pattern, it looks very similar from the top side. The easier version (Subtle Sea Star) is now also included with this pattern.

An intermediate knitter should be able to tackle this pattern, but you will need to know how to do circular knitting on dp needles, or if you prefer, magic loop technique. There is also a custom twisted loop st (for the feet) and different types of increases and decreases to be done while knitting in the round.

Use any fingering weight yarn, but yarn that includes at least 50% wool will hold the shape better.
