Persephone was the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, the harvest goddess. Once while playing in a meadow, she was seized by Hades and carried off to the underworld as his bride. Demeter searched high and low, and refused to let the trees and plants grow while her daughter was missing. People were starving. Zeus finally forced Hades to return Persephone, as long as she hadn’t eaten anything while there. But Hades had tricked her into eating 6 pomegranate seeds. For every seed that she had eaten, she was doomed to spend a month each year with Hades, and for that time, the world does not bear fruit.
The six pomegranate seeds can be seen on the border of the shawl, and the body contains the winding paths to the underworld.
