Sophie’s Universe was a mystery crochet-along hosted in 2015 by Kimberly Slifer and designed by Dedri Uys.

The CAL started on the 18th of January 2015 and ran for 20 weeks, with parts being released weekly on a Sunday.

Even though the CAL has now finished, the online community around it is still thriving and it is not hard to find a group where someone is making Sophie, either individually or as a group.

Sophie’s Universe is much more than just a continuous square blanket; it is a journey of discovery. Although the pattern is advanced, it has been written specifically for adventurous beginners. Each round is explained in detail, with step-by-step photos and hints to help you create your blanket and master the art of crochet. There are also step-by-step videos by Esther Dijkstra from It’s All in a Nutshell.

Optional instructions have been provided should you wish to add on to your blanket, either to grow it or to make it rectangular.

SIZES

The original (Large) was made using Scheepjes Stonewashed XL Worsted Weight Weight Yarn(#4) and a 5mm/5.5mm crochet hook, which should give you a finished blanket size of 1.8m x 1.8m (just over 6’ square).

I also made two more sizes/colourways for the CAL:

Medium

  • Scheepjes Softfun Double Knit (#3)
  • 3.5mm hook
  • 4mm hook

Small

  • Scheepjes Cotton 8 (#2)
  • 2.5mm hook
  • 3mm hook
