This double knit pattern for a potholder, could easily be extended lengthwise, to create a scarf, or made wider (by increasing the cast on by multiples of 8) and longer to make placemats, or even a floor mat. Obviously, yardage requirements will change if you do so.

The pattern is based on a classic quilt pattern, but it is a lively design that has a very modern look.

The gauge of potholder is very loose, and it will be improved by washing in hot water to shrink and tighten the work.

The pot holder could also be worked in wool, and fulled (felted)--Wool is an excellent insulator.
Not suitable for the potholder application are most synthetics, which can melt and be a fire hazard.
