I had to alter the design so it doesn’t infringe on the Superman trademark, so please see:
The pattern is mostly in one piece and has short row shaping for the diaper area. It includes charts for boys and girls and a photo tutorial on how to make the cape.
AND it includes a blank chart with instructions on how to personalize the design with your child’s initial, favorite sports team logo…and if you choose to make a giant S…well…I can’t stop you.
I’m thrilled that so many people seem to like this pattern!
I’d love to sell the pattern, but didn’t want to get into trouble because it is in the likeness of a licensed character. I contacted DC Comics (who own the rights to Superman) and asked for permission to sell my pattern. They said no.
Their actual words are:
Thank you for requesting permission to create and market knitting patterns for children’s Superman costumes. While we appreciate your interest, we cannot, unfortunately, grant you permission to create and market the patterns as requested.
As the owner of all rights, including trademark and copyright, in and to Superman, DC Comics has invested a significant amount of time, effort and financial resources developing its characters, including all related trademarks, logos and related indicia. We receive requests such as yours on a daily basis and, more often than not, we must decline to grant permission for the requested use. We thank you for cooperating with our decision.
So…that being said…I’d still like to make a version of the pattern available. As soon as I am able, I will work up a second version of the pattern. Instead of the Superman “S” it will have a generic “superhero” logo. The colors will be different as well. I hope that will satisfy those of you who want to make your own little superbabies!
If you would be interested in the pattern, please leave me a comment and I’ll let you know as soon as it becomes available for sale.
