The engineering here is sophisticated, but the knitting of this sleek, modern necklace is simple.

Apart from its cleverness and beauty, this is a fantastic project for using up oddments of special yarns. Perfect as a quick gift for a friend, or as a souvenir of a special yarn you love.

And just plain fun to make!

Gauge doesn’t matter much with this necklace. We chose worsted-weight yarns, but you can go thinner or thicker and get wonderful results.

Knitted Measurements:

Approximately 8” wide by 22-24” long (20.5 x 56-61 cm), including ties.

Materials:

Dream State by Spincycle Yarns 50g skeins, each approx 150 yds (137 m), 100% superwash American merino wool: 1 skein Salty Dog.

Or:

Creative Linen by Rowan 100g skeins, each approx 218 yds (200m), 50% linen/50% cotton: 1 skein #635 Stormy

Two size US 5 (3.75 mm) double-pointed needles

Removable stitch marker

Fork blocking pins (optional)

Gauge: 25 rows = 4” (10 cm) over I-cord, blocked.

Note: gauge is not critical for this project.

The necklace is worked in one piece from end to end, beginning with an I-cord tie that is increased to divide into two I-cords to form the top and bottom bands of the necklace. Yarnovers are worked between the bands to create additional stitches that are dropped before blocking. Once the body of the necklace is complete, decreases are worked to bring the bands back together, to end with a second I-cord tie.
