Stay toasty on the coldest winter day!

Chunky cables and no seaming? Yes, please! Inspired by a hat worn by Prairie Johnson in the Netflix original series The OA, this quick-knit rolled-brim toque (or the alternate brimless beanie) looks good on any age and gender. Knits from the brim up in the round in super bulky yarn and big needles in the time it takes to binge-watch a couple of episodes.

Make the matching cowl, knit in the round from shoulders to neck in a snug or loose option, as the perfect cozy complement! Cables are charted and written out.

ABOUT SAMPLES

RED AND BLACK / WHITE MARLED:

  • Patons Classic Wool Bulky, a triple-ply super bulky 100% wool yarn with 71 m / 78 yards in a 100 gram / 3.53-ounce skein that knits up to 12 stitches and 16 rows per 4 inches / 10 cm on 8.0 mm (US 11) needles
  • Colourways: Bright Red and Dark Gray Ragg
  • Hats made in size Large. The larger cowl is pictured.

This yarn has been discontinued. For substitutes, look for a plied wool yarn with good stitch definition of approximately the same gauge and yardage per weight.

Suggested substitute:

TEAL HAT:

  • Rowan Big Wool, a triple-ply super bulky 100% merino wool yarn with 80 metres / 87 yards in a 100 gram / 3.53-ounce skein that knits up to 7.5 to 9 stitches and 10 rows per 10 cm / 4 inches on 10.0 to 15.0 mm (US 15 to 18) needles
  • Colourway: 87 Mallard
  • Size Large
  • This is slightly bulkier than the original gauge, but it’s similar enough and the pattern is forgiving enough that it works fine.
