With this design, the egg fits inside the body of the tortoise and then ‘hatches’ to reveal the baby inside that!

This pattern is 15 pages long and includes the instructions for the adult tortoise, as well as for the baby and its egg. It contains loads of photos to help you every step of the way and it is written in American crochet terms.

You will need:

Yarn of your choice. Yarn weight doesn’t really matter - the size of your project will simply turn out bigger or smaller! I used Patons Smoothie DK Yarn (this is quite a thick DK yarn so it is equivalent to aran or light worsted weight in other brands) and my finished tortoise measures approx 21cm long.

For the adult tortoise you will need the following colours:
Beige, brown, pale yellow or cream, green.

For the baby & egg you will need the following colours:
Beige, green & cream.

A suitable size hook for the yarn you have chosen - I used a 4mm hook.

Toy stuffing.

Black and brown finer yarn or embroidery thread for the details on the baby.

A pair of 9mm black eyes.

A small button for fastening the egg & a press stud / snap fastener for fastening the tortoise!

Other tools you will need are a tapestry needle, some scissors and a stitch marker. You will also need a needle and thread for attaching the button & press stud / snap fastener.
