In Twelfth Night, following a shipwreck, Viola finds herself separated from her twin brother and thus alone in the world. To ensure her safety, she disguises herself as a man, all the while knowing herself to be a woman. These socks feature a lacy, beaded, feminine cuff that can be hidden underneath a pant leg. The twisted lattice on the lower leg and foot could easily be a man’s stocking in Illyria.
