If other people can do “Flock to Sock” and “Sheep to Shawl”, I’m going to do “Worm to Wrap”! I am processing silk cocoons, and will then spin them into silk yarn, which I will then use to knit a lace wrap! If nothing else, it’ll give me something to podcast about ;)
10-22-09 - I’ve finally got the right soap for degumming the cocoons. Homemade laundry soap works much better than dish soap. I don’t yet have a spindle light enough to spin the silk, but I have plenty of time to find one, as there are still at least 200 cocoons to degum.
10-23-09 - Ok, if you can get past the idea, SAVE THE DEGUMMING WATER! I read on the site where I bought the cocoons that it makes a good conditioning rinse for your hair. I tried it last night, and sure enough, it does!
10-24-09 - Tonight I broke off a little bit of the processed cocoons and experimented with dyeing. I used green food coloring in a small bowl of water, and microwaved the silk in two minute incriments. After it cooled and was rinsed and washed, it turned into a lovely turquoise color! The silk that didn’t process out completely white retained some of the green, so if I decide to dye the whole batch, it will have a subtle varigation.
