The pattern says that this shall be for intermediate crocheters, but honestly, its written well and uses simple stitches, so a beginner can even work this up with ease.

To get a newborn sized hat, I followed the toddler sized pattern using the smaller G hook (instead of J) and the worsted weight yarn. This worked up very nicely and looks great.
