Cast on 145 sts, 8 edge sts on each side + 129 knotted openwork pattern.

I knit 11 rows of seed stitch then switched to the knotted openwork pattern, keeping 8 edge sts on each side for a seed stitch border.

As described in the pattern, the knotted openwork stitch is worked over 4 rows, with multiples of 3 sts.

• Row 1 : (seed st border), K2, repeat “YO, K3, pass the first st over” to the last st, K1 (seed st border)
• Row 2 : (seed st) Purl (seed st).
• Row 3 : (seed st) K1, Repeat “K3, pass the first st over, YO” to the last 2 sts, K2 (seed st)
• Row 4 : (seed st) Purl (seed st)

I finished the first ball and have a little over 12” done, but I came to realize I really don’t like the way the pattern is written. I’ll finish it that way anyways since I’m so far in, but I feel there’s 2 completely useless stitches at the beginning and end of the knotted openwork stitch. I’d rather work it this way, working with multiples of 3+1 :

• Row 1 : K1, repeat “YO, K3, pass the first st over”
• Row 3 : Repeat “K3, pass the first st over, YO” to the last st, K1
