I made a couple more pussyhats for an exhibition celebrating the first anniversary of the resistance. I have a few plain ones on hand but wanted some fancy ones to go with them.
I’ve had this idea for a pussyhat with a “hatband” of crocheted flowers for a while now. Surprisingly, it worked out almost exactly as I’d imagined!
hook size G
needles US 3 and 4
CO 100 sts with WM DK on US 3; 2x2 rib whole hat. Change to US 5 after about 3 inches. Incr 4 sts each end at about 5 1/2 inches (for “ears”). Work until piece measures 8 inches.
German twisted CO; 3-needle BO from WS.
Crochet flowers are from the Dahlia Flower pattern. I used a combo of WM DK and Dibadu Trios. Added an extra round of petals to most of the flowers. They’re very full and frilly with this yarn/hook combination! Reduced the number of petals in Rnds 2 and 3 to help them lie flat. Made smaller flowers for the back to make it easier to wear.
I ended up knitting the hat and sewing the flowers onto it, rather than doing anything clever with picked-up stitches. (I always go for the simplest solution that works.) The hardest part was pinning the flowers onto the hat while I was wearing it, lol. I poked myself in the head more than once, then pinned my hair to the hat and had to go through some rather frantic contortions to free myself without losing the position of the flowers.
It’s important to have the flowers bunched quite tightly together in order to have a lush, full look when the hat is stretched around a head. My head is bigger than the glass head pictured here, as well as bigger than the average woman’s head, which is why I used my own head as a dressmaker’s dummy for pinning purposes.
