A fun pattern to knit! I love the layers of texture that accompany the colorwork. These two colors turned out to be magic together. I’ll be using them again.

In case you’re wondering, the project name refers to Dr Seuss’s The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins. In the story, young Bartholomew is required to remove his hat in the presence of the king or risk losing his head; but every time he takes it off, another hat sprouts in its place! I have much the same trouble with hats, only in reverse: I make one (usually for my son or myself) and someone of my acquaintance spots it and wants it. So I gift it, swap it, or sell it, and suddenly there is no hat where just a minute ago I had a lovely finished one. My hats disappear as fast as I can put them on!

Next time I’ll increase 10 stitches after the braid to give it a softer shape. I like hats to be a little bit slouchy.

Yarn held double. Used 220yds of purple, 244yds of green. If I were using DK I’d have used half that yardage.
