Notes

In the first couple of days after the amazing Women’s March on Washington and Everywhere Else, I got requests for twelve more pussyhats! How could I say no? I knit them in exchange for donations to Planned Parenthood (in Mike Pence’s name) or the ACLU. Guess I’ll keep knitting them until I just can’t stand them anymore :)

My first batch of hats, the ones that went to that first amazing march, are on their own project page, Pussies Grab Back.

The requests kept coming, so I created a third project page, Pussycat, Pussyhat: Pink Cat Hats Part 3.

The fourth and final batch of pussyhats can be found in Pussyhat Nation: Pink Cat Hats Part IV.

And because I started getting requests for baby hats and I used a specific pattern for the first few, I created yet another project page for them, Kittenhats

Hat 1: for Shelly Tackitt
yarn held double
WM Twin: Nichts, Babe and Tutu Dark

experimented with 1.5- and 2.5-row helical stripes, but I got them wrong! Still ended up with a pretty hat :)

Hat 2: for Joanne

needles US2 and US6
yarn held double
WM Twin: Babe; WM Pure: Dornroschen WD

Barbara Walker Mosaic 48: Garden Plot.

CO 104 sts, work k2p2 rib for 3 inches. Knit one round, increasingly evenly 8 sts to 112 sts (now set for 16-st repeat mosaic)

Work mosaic chart once; knit in MC until piece measures 8.25 inches from CO.

Note: The mosaic design pulls in the stitches quite a bit, which is why it’s important to increase after the ribbing.

Hat 3: for Anne

needles US3 and US6

yarn held double
WM Twin, Tutu and Dornroschen
Barbara Walker mosaic Band 50

with US3, CO 100 sts, work 2x2 rib for 3”
switch to US6 needles, K one round, i while increasing to 112 sts evenly spaced
join CC and work mosaic chart one time.

Hat 4: Greg

Walker Mosaic 15

yarn held double
WM Pure: RS 02 (Wild Raspberry Sleeping Beauty)and WM Twin: Nichts

CO 108 sts with US2, work 2x2 rib for 3”
switch to US6, knit one round increasingly evenly to 120 sts. Join CC and work mosaic chart twice. Knit even in MC until piece measures 9” from CO.

Hat 5: for Martin

Schwarz Pure yarn held double

CO 116. No increases.

Hat 6: for Stephanie

yarn held double
Wollmeise Twin Tutu medium and Pure Dornroschen WD

CO 100 sts, increased to 108 sts for Walker Mosaic 80

Hat 7: for Jamie

US5 needles for I-cord band, US6 needles for all the rest.
yarn held double
WM Twin and Pure, Nichts and Fuchsia.

Brioche band. I-cord 81 sts; pick up and knit 76 sts evenly spaced. Work 2-color brioche rib for 1.5 inches; work 2-color brioche moss st for 2.5 inches. Switch to stockinette--knit every stitch, including the yo (ktbl). Ended up with 114 sts. Worked in 3 Nichts/4 Fuchsia-row stripes until 8.5 inches. Tried to improvise a 3-needle I-cord bind off on the RS, but it was midnight and looked a mess, so I did a regular 3-needle BO on the WS.

Hat 8: Cindy

yarn held double
Nichts, Tutu Medium, RS02
US5 needles

5-stitch I-cord, made 86 I-cord sts and picked up 76 sts from it.

(Before blocking, I’m thinking I would make the I-cord another 5 sts longer, and pick up 80 sts.)

After blocking--it fits nicely, neither snug nor slouchy, and it’s super cute! (I’ll want it to be slightly longer and wider, more like #7, for my own big head.)

Hat 9: Melike

yarn held double
Twin Tutu Med, Pure Dorn WD

US5 needles: CO 76 with German twisted, begin 2-color brioche rib. Work 3.5 inches. Last row, do not work slyo; instead, knit that stitch.

US6 needles change to stockinette. Inc to 100sts. Work until close to 9” long. 3-needle BO on WS.

This hat has a lot of give in the brioche rib and should be a good size for a larger man’s head. If I do a standard CO for brioche rib again, I will do approx 8 fewer sts for more snug ribbing.

Hat 10: Danny’s guys

yarn held double
Babe and Fuchsia

CO 76 US5 needles, worked 4” brioche rib.

Changed to US6 needles and stockinette. Increased to 114 sts, worked until 9”. Forgot to work transition row after brioche, so I worked each slyo as ktbl (the yo, which should be worked first), k.

This one is pretty big. 114 sts is too many for a woman’s hat. 100 is better.

Hat 11: Melike’s daughter 1

yarn held double
Tortchen Twin, VG Eidoes ELCred-violet

US4 needles: CO 76 sts with German Twisted; work 2-color brioche rib for 4 inches.

Switch to stockinette; increase 26 sts evenly around (102 sts)

Switch to US6 needles and work pattern: YO, k2 tbl, k2tog, k2 until piece measures 8.5” Knit two rows even. Bind off WS using three-needle BO.

Hat 12: (20 total) Melike daughter 2

yarn held double
WM Pure, Törtchen and RS02.

With US5, CO 76 sts; work in 2-color brioche rib for 3-4 inches.
Change to stockinette st; inc 38 sts evenly spaced (114 sts)

Change to US6 and work body in diagonal rib as follows:
Setup Row: *YO, k2, k2tog, k2*.
All the other rows: *YO, k1tbl, k1, k2tog, k2*.
Work until piece measures approx 8 1/4”
Work transition row: *k1tbl, k5*.
Knit one row. BO on the WS with 3-needle BO.

Stitch pattern draws in the yarn a lot. Next time I would increase another 38 sts to double the stitch count from the ribbing.
