There’s a method to that madness: I used a permutation generator to write a coded list of all the possible squares I could make with three colors and with two colors. You can see the outer-color pattern (brown/green in one column, pink/yellow in the other). I also did not let two same-colored-middles be side-by-side (there’s one mistake in there, though).
