Gauge appears to be about 3.5 stitches per inch, so I’m scaling this down a little. Starting out with 104 stitches cast on and adjusting the other numbers accordingly.
12/14/10 - Holy crap it’s huge. However, I was in denial about it until about halfway through the first sleeve, when I realized if I kept going, I would need a THIRD ball of Marble Chunky. My three-year-old nephew isn’t large enough to require THREE enormous balls of Marble Chunky for a sweater/jacket. Ripped the entire thing out at knitting tonight and started from scratch. Think I can still finish for Christmas?!?!
1/7/11 - Obviously, didn’t finish for Christmas. As of today, body and hood are finished and one sleeve is started.
1/11/11 - Finished knitting.
1/12/11 - Seamed up sleeves/armholes and wove in ends. Now I just need to buy a zipper, sew it in, and finish it off with a nice crochet edging.
1/15/11 - Got the zipper. Changed my mind and decided on applied i-cord instead of crochet edging. Zipper will go in after the i-cord is finished. (Later that day… Voila, it’s done!)
Used the U.S. 10.5 needle for the applied i-cord. Didn’t use the full 2 balls of Marble Chunky, but close; maybe 20-30 grams left over, I’m guessing.
Post-project doubts: I’m hoping the armholes aren’t too small. They looked absolutely enormous before the sleeves were attached; seaming up the sleeves pulled everything together a bit more.
May 2011 update - after visiting earlier this month to meet Billy’s new baby sister (our niece Cora), I was happy to see signs of use (pilling) on Billy’s tomten. According to my sister-in-law, he LOVES wearing it. Luckily, they live in the mountains so they have some cool days in spring/fall and some summer evenings so it will be put to good use!
