This was a preview knit for Ailbíona McLochlainn. It’s a great pattern and perfect for cold days.
The lower neck edge is folding upwards, though I worked it about 11 cm instead of 12 cm. But it’s easy to fold it to the inside to get the right length, and it gives a soft edge.
Modifications when making it again next time:
I would go up one needle size for the stretchy cast on (I used a German Twisted CO/ Old Norwegian CO).
Measurements:
All measurements are as in pattern, unless:
- My neck is 1 cm shorter
- My face opening circumference is 8 cm wider (50 cm)
Needles:
- Main needle 3.0 mm
- Ribbing needle for face opening 2.5 mm.
- Face ribbing Bind-off with needle 3.0 as standard BO (instead of stretchy BO; worked great)
Yarn: Also see details below, and yarn amount meterages/ yardage on top of this project page.
- Rico Design Luxury Hand Dyed Happiness Merino Extrafine DK (see weights below). 55 g used total. For this project, I didn’t alternate skeins.
- Tiger Fluffy Mohair: My yarn weight when starting, including cone: 1054 g. Used total: 32 g (1022 g left).
- Sandnes Sisu: see notes below. 4 g used total.
Rico Design Luxury Hand Dyed Happiness Merino Extrafine DK Skeins:
(1) 27 g: from start to 8 cm after working flat.
(2) 28 g: all used up at ribbing first round after pick up round.
Used total: 55 g (nothing left).
Since the DK weight yarn amount was not enough for my project, I added another yarn: Sandnes Sisu orange, leftovers.
(1) 9 g from face ribbing round 3 to end. 4 g used (5 g left)
Gauge:
The ribbing is measured unstretched.
My DK yarn is on the lighter side, and I had to frog the first try because the neck came out too tight. Started again holding one strand of the DK yarn together with a thinn mohair thread, which gave me the correct neck width and gauge.
Notes:
Establishing the Fishermans rib:
When working the first row, just follow the established rib pattern.
Errors in test pattern:
There are some small errors for the Lower hood, row 3. Should be: … WP to (r)end. Also, the last stitch of the RS rows should be a knit stitch.
Page 6, crown shaping, short row 1:
In the first short row, the SL1Pwyb, SLM will not be worked. When we slipped the first 29 sts to right needle, we already had slipped the marker (SLM, as written at end of line 1).
Page 6, Crown shaping: after the short rows have been worked, 21 sts remain for size 2 (19 sts between markers and 1 st outside each marker). This also influences the pick up stitch count for the ribbing, which should be: 5+44+21+44 sts = 114 sts.*
Page 6, Edging, last paragraf, round 1: 1x1 ribbing pattern starts with P1, not K1.
