In the Ifff group challenge “The garden of unearthly delights” in week 8 we were asked to make (young) ferns, using Romanian lace cord and spirals.

While doing this I thought this also might be a nice rolled tail of a chameleon… I still wanted to make a chameleon for my art project about bullying. So this was the opportunity to try it. I used the Romanian lace cord also for the legs and the eyes. The rest of the animal I made improvising, using a kind of picots in combination with sc., to make the scales.

I have made a series of textile books in which I show how the bullying has influenced my life. One of the pages was about the chameleon character.
After I was bullied for a long time I acted like a chameleon. Laughing at jokes I did not like or even understand, just to fit into the group…
And also hiding and blending into the surrounding….

I am not free as long as I am a victim of my inner chameleon. But if I am able to play with the qualities of the chameleon I am.
So this means to me playing with being visible and invisible, blending with the surrounding and coming out of it. Fit in or being proud to be different… And all of this whenever I want it and as long as I want it.

This chameleon I have crocheted I intend to use with the text in a new series of books or a wall hanging.

In the background some ferns (not attached to the chameleon).

At this page at FB you can keep updated about my art project.
