Soft Seam Technique by Nancy Schaeffer

Project info
Knitting
Baby clothes, flat seaming
Needles & yarn
Notes

Whipstitch from right side to left side. Sew through outside legs of bound off stitches.

Learned this from my mother in law (Nancy Schaeffer) who seamed shoulders this way before picking up and knitting sleeves from the shoulder to the wrist. Very tidy and soft seam appropriate for baby clothes and booties.

I’m very happy so many people have faved Nancy’s technique, it is a nice way to honor her memory!

Edit 1/9/2018: I recently discovered that this stitch and my illustration slightly modified was lifted from this website, or my blog, or Pinterest, and printed in a book of techniques, without attribution to Nancy Schaeffer. Nancy was a wonderful knitter, and it is my hope her name will always be associated with this technique.

A few days ago 6,000 people viewed this page over three days, for a total page view count of 9826 today. So using rounded numbers from August 2009 to March 2024 3,000 views, then in this past week an additional 6,000 views. I can only guess the traffic came from Pinterest. I am simply amazed. Go Nancy!

I’ve found it is also great for seams at the bottoms of socks, and for seaming together items with chain stitched selvedge edges. I use it all the time of course, but it was Nancy’s beautiful shoulder seams that led me to unpick that shoulder seam 15 years ago.
