Notes

04/12/10: Since I ran out of yarn for my Tappan Zee cardigan (only temporarily, I have since spun some more, and it’s drying as I type this), I had the very strong impulse to cast-on for something new instead of finishing some UFO. So I pulled out this hand-dysed sock yarn that I bought at the First German Raveler meeting. Knitting this makes me very happy, the colors are great, and I love how they pool. I’m already at row 46, and I didn’t have to frog anything.

04/26/10: And again this has been my favorite knitting project for the moment. I didn’t even start a new pair of socks even though I would have been allowed to under my own rules.
And again I start to get a little nervous about the remaining yarn…

04/15/10: So I knit merrily along (and I really love how it looks), and then I find that the ball of yarn I have left looks quite small. So I put it on the scales, and behold with 25 more rows to knit I have only 25 grams left. Which surely isn’t enough. Since I knit quite lose I will frog it completely, go down in needle size, and start over, this time knitting tighter (in addition to the smaller needle). I will weigh the yarn after row 60 or so, and then decide whether to knit less garter rows and modify the scallop edge or whether I might have enough to knit it as written. I used a 3.5 mm needle the first time, and now I’ll go down to 3.0

04/27/10: The second time knitting this was a real pleasure again but not so much so that I would have wanted to frog back for a second time when I ran out of yarn again. This time halfway through the last row before bind-off. Instead I used a different purple yarn to knit the rest of the row and the bind-off. Sadly the two purples don’t really match, but since the first yarn I used has these colorful parts in it it does work.

If I had known I would need that much yarn I would have used a 2.5 mm needle, or would have made the shawl smaller. I weighed the yarn after finishing the garter stitch part and thought I had enough left…

So - this shawl really uses more yarn than it says in the pattern. And the row before bind-off, and the bind-off itself uses quite a bit on top of that.

10/29/10: Took me forever to block this but now it’s done. It’s really nice looking and turned out bigger than I would have thought.
