Modifications:

• hat worked without ribbed brim with larger pleat stitch worked twice on one side and smaller pleat stitch worked between them on other side of hat. Then one round Purl and decrease 6 stitches every rnd to make flat crown. Brim is picked up from the cast on and increased as worked.

• arms knit top down encasing a wire. After 20 rnds split and work half stitches for fingers 5r. Then for thumb join yarn and work other half for 2 rnds.

• nose worked from tip in, increasing regularly to make cone shape. I decided that he completely lost the look of a gnome with the carrot nose, so chose to roll the cone up to give a more plump nose.

• beard is fringes added around the bottom of the nose starting at the brim of the hat and working around.

• buttons are French knots, doubled yarn and wrapped 3 times.
