The joining was fun and quick.
Border :
1rst round :
2 chain sts, 1 single crochet in the joining ; 2 cs, 1 sc after two trebbles, 2 cs, 1 sc in each of the 4 holes ; 2 cs, 1 sc after three trebbles (before the last two) ; repeat all around, taking the opportunity to bury all ends left over from the joining work.
2nd round :
3 dc in each loop. (corners : 2 dc, 2 cs, 2 dc in the corner st.)
3rd row and 4rth row :
chain 3, sc in each hole
5th row :
9 dc in the corner loop, 1 ss in the next loop, 9 dc in the next loop repeat, taking care of having the 9 dc in each corner.

Colour arrangement :
Each squares was stacked in order, all skeins kept separately.
I divided my stacks in “mostly neutral” and “mostly colourful”, and arranged them in a pleasing alternating sequences.
I then very quickly laid each stack in diagonal rows, in the 10x12 grid that would work for my number of squares. (see photos)
Then I took my time looking at the arrangement, and swapping two squares at a time until I liked the general effect. This give me some movement in the arrangement, where the squares of the same colour still can be spotted in a diagonal line, while giving a more balanced look and keeping the eye moving in all directions. I really LOVE the final arrangement.
Changing the joining method.
I have arranged my squares and stacked them ready to be joined in diagonal. But Clo’s method does not satisfy me. The squares do not align perfectly, and the crossing at the corners are not pretty.
So I do 1 sc catching both squares, 2 cs between each cluster of three (2 in the corners) stitches. When I am in an inner corner, I do 1 sc in the current two squares’s corner, 1 ss in the dark corner stitch, 1 sc in the new squares’s corner. (sorry if I am cryptic. Not my intention.)
The joining is a little more firm, and the dark line is much smaller. I think it’s going to be good.

#04 also gave 10 squares. I managed to make two more with the remnants. So I have 120 squares total.
That means my blanket will be 10x12 squares.
I will decide tomorrow if I plan all the color placement before joining the squares, of if dividing them in two “mostly neutral” and “mostly colorful” batch and joining in diagonals, choosing semi-hazardly but alternating between the two sets for each diagonal will be enough to get a good mixed effect.
I may go read a few Kaffe Fassett books before breaking my pretty little squares stacks… He is really good at that kind of semi-random color placement.
boring story of all the squares in the making :

109 squares done.
Only one ball and 11 squares to go. I may be finished with the squares in only one month total. :) I am happy to have added a photo while the squares are still hanging on my bookshelves.

104 squares
I will use this method of assemblage : http://mes-petites-croix.over-blog.com/article-assemblage-plaid-delight-drops-65768569.html but fill in the intersections better.
I only have something like 15 squares to crochet. Except 119 is not a good number to make a rectangle. I hope I will be able to make two more with the remnants. Then I will have a square blanket with 11x11 squares. If I only have 120, I can do a 10x12.

Argh, again 10 squares only in the #14 purple.
Sigh.
So, 75 squares done.

The 08 green is muddy AND I only obtained 10 squares from the skein. I may try to crochet with the leftovers at the end if I miss a couple of squares.
so : 65 squares at the moment.

63 done.
21/2/2014
52 done.
I am regretting not buying more of the #10 colorway. It’s gorgeous. What color will I use for the joining? Probably black.
I dislike the #8 green colorway. Really dull. I am trying to finish it today so that I don’t have to look at it until the end of the project. It may be a good, dull, neuter addition to the whole actually. We’ll see.
Leaving for a week’s vacation. Not sure I wan to take it with me, but I don’t have another project in progress. :-/

42 squares done. If I make 121 squares, I have 34% done. More than a third.
16/2/2014
29 squares done.
13/2/2014
15 squares done. (11 in one ball of #11 - but just. 4 in #7 for now)

After a couple of squares with 5mm and 4 mm crichet I decided to go with the original size. I already have 7 squares made, and the pattern memorized. It’s going to be fun.

While waiting for my yarn to arrive, I made a test-square with 3mm hook and Land Donegal. So pretty!
Total weight : around 700 gr.
Total yardage : 2555 m.
